LICENCES

Free software, and what it's made with.

Bibliotaph is free software: you can share and change it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, version 3 of the License or, at your option, any later version. It comes with no warranty; see the licence for details.

Copyright © 2026 munkycdev. The full text is in LICENSE, and the source code of the Windows app and of this website is on GitHub.

Additional permission

Bibliotaph is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or (at your option) any later version (see LICENSE), with the following additional permission.

If you modify this Program, or any covered work, by linking or combining it with the Microsoft Windows SDK projection for .NET (Microsoft.Windows.SDK.NET.dll and its companion WinRT.Runtime.dll, as distributed in the NuGet package Microsoft.Windows.SDK.NET.Ref), or a modified version of that library, containing parts covered by the terms of the Microsoft Windows SDK licence terms, the licensors of this Program grant you additional permission to convey the resulting work.

This permission is there so that Bibliotaph can use Windows' own text recognition (Windows.Media.Ocr) for scanned pages, and WebView2's composition control, which is built on the projection, for its e-book reader. You may remove it from your copies of this Program, as section 7 allows; if you do, a version you convey must not include that projection.

The components below keep their own licences. All of them can be combined with GPL-3.0 code. The standard texts:

Book data

Book details looked up on RPGGeek come from BoardGameGeek, an adventure's levels and environments from AdventureLookup, used with its maintainers' permission, and those looked up on Open Library and Google Books from those catalogues.

Bibliotaph is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (see LICENSE). It includes or depends on the components below, which keep their own licences. All of them are permissive (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, ISC, FreeType, public domain), and all of them can be combined with GPL-3.0 code, apart from the Windows SDK projection, which Bibliotaph may ship under the additional permission in LICENSE-EXCEPTION.md (see the table). Apache-2.0 is compatible with GPL version 3, not version 2, which is one reason the project is GPL-3.0 rather than GPL-2.0.

The fonts stay under the SIL Open Font License. The OFL allows bundling them with software under any licence; they are not relicensed under the GPL.

PDFium's bundled libraries. The PDFium binary includes code from libraries such as FreeType, libjpeg-turbo, libpng, zlib, OpenJPEG, Little CMS and Abseil. Each pdfium-binaries release ships a LICENSE file with all of their notices. FreeType is used under the FreeType License, which asks for this credit in the documentation: Portions of this software are copyright © The FreeType Project (www.freetype.org). All rights reserved.

Full texts. The app carries every text above in its licenses\ folder, which the About popup reads: LICENSE.txt, this file, the fonts' and Lucide's licences, and packages\<id>.txt for each package that ships, written by tools/LicenseNotices from the package's own licence and notice files (or the standard text for its SPDX id, kept in tools/LicenseNotices/texts/), plus packages\pdfium.txt with the pdfium-binaries notices for the pinned PDFium build. The tool fails the build when a shipped package's licence is unknown or not GPL-3.0-compatible.

Book data from online catalogues

Each catalogue is sent a book's ISBNs, and RPGGeek and AdventureLookup, which can only be searched by name, a title (AdventureLookup is sent the title of a book that prints no ISBN too), and each suggestion it gives names it as its source ("Open Library's record of …", with the record's title). Settings > Processing says where they go.
