Binders

A binder gathers books and pages in one place, in your order, with your notes. It can be a focused set of references, everything an adventure needs, or any other collection of pages you want together. You step through it instead of hunting through folders.

Make a binder

On the Binders page, click New binder. Give it a title and, if you like, a date. Binders with a date list under Upcoming; the rest under No date yet, and past ones behind a link at the bottom. Each group is in name order.

The binder you worked on last is your current one. Home shows it under Current binder.

Add books and pages

  • A whole book: Add to binder on a book's right-click menu or in its details, or for many books, in the Library's Select mode.
  • One page: the + beside a matching page in the search results, or Add to binder in the reader, which lists your binders. A page added from the reader is labelled after the bookmark it's under.
  • A range of pages: in the reader, Add to binder has Add pages… at the bottom of its menu. Give the range a label you'll recognize at a glance, such as "Warehouse ambush", and pick a section.
  • A page you read online: in the online reader, Add this page adds the page you're on, such as a chapter of a book on D&D Beyond, labelled with the page's own name. See Online libraries.

Each of these adds to your current binder, and lets you pick another binder or make a new one. A book can be in a binder more than once, at different pages.

Run a session

Open a binder from the Binders page, from Home or from a pin. Its items are listed down the left, the reader is in the middle, and the binder's notes are on the right.

  • Next and Previous (or Ctrl+Right and Ctrl+Left) open each item at its first page. The next item in the same book shows at once, and the next book is opened in the background so it's ready when you get there.
  • A page you read online opens in the online reader, right there in the binder, signed in as you. Next and Previous step between PDFs, e-books and pages online alike. If you've chosen to read online books in your everyday browser, the binder says so: open the page from Edit binder or At hand instead.
  • The reader's header shows where you are, such as "p. 42–44 · 1 of 3". Wander off into the rest of the book, and Back to this item's pages brings you back. In the page thumbnails, the item's pages are marked.
  • Add this page adds the page you're looking at straight after the item in hand, ready to name.
  • Rename an item where it is: double-click it, or select it and press F2. Enter saves, Esc cancels.
  • The notes on the item's pages show under On these pages, and the binder's own notes under Binder notes, saved as you type.
  • Pop out moves the binder into its own window, for a second screen. Return to main window brings it back at the same page.

Rules at hand

Some binders are references you come back to from any other: rules, tables and the like. When you make one (or later, with Edit title and date), tick Keep at hand, and choose its game system if you like. These binders list under At hand on the Binders page.

In any other binder, the At hand button lists them with their pages, those for the game systems of the binder's books first. Pick one and the page opens in a window of its own, so the binder and page you're on stay put.

Edit a binder

Edit binder in the binder's reader shows the full list:

  • Add section puts in a heading: Adventure, Maps, Encounters, Rules, or Another name….
  • Drag an item by its grip to move it, or use Alt+Up and Alt+Down. Each item's menu moves it to another section.
  • Each item has a label (blank shows the book's title) and a note.
  • Duplicate copies the binder (without its date) to start a similar one; Delete removes it, with Undo. The books stay in your library either way.
  • Show these books in the Library shows just this binder's books; Find resources opens the Library to find more.
  • Done goes back to the reader.

When a book changes

Binder items point at pages, and follow them:

  • A new version of a book (an updated PDF from the publisher): each item is found in the new version by its text. An item that can't be found opens at the same printed page, marked "This page changed: check it", with Use this page. Needs review lists them too.
  • Another copy of the book: items open at the matching pages in whichever copy opens.
  • A book on a drive that isn't plugged in, or a file that's gone: the item stays in the binder, saying why, with Try again or Find it.
